Hoffmann Vespa

VESPA ENGLISH

VESPA DI INDONESIA

Vespa masuk ke Indonesia pada tahun 1960 melalui ATPM (Agen Tunggal Pemegang Merk) PT Danmotors Vespa Indonesia/DVI di Pulo Gadung Jakarta yang sekarang sudah tidak aktif lagi (sekarang dipegang oleh PT Sentra Kreasi Niaga/SKN sebagai dealer utama saja. Note: Bukan importir atau distributor eksklusif).

Vespa saat itu mempunyai prestise yang sangat tinggi, terbukti dengan harga vespa saat itu setara dengan harga sebuah rumah tipe standar. Seiring dengan penetrasi Honda ke pasar dunia yang turut menggoyahkan berbagai merk motor, Indonesia ternyata tidak luput dari fenomena tersebut. Vespa menjadi salah satu merk sepeda motor yang ‘tergusur’ oleh motor Jepang, meski pada awalnya harga vespa Sprint saat itu bahkan sedikit lebih mahal daripada motor Honda CB 200 Twin Cakram yang saat itu merupakan motor Honda paling mahal.

Ada banyak kajian mengapa vespa kesulitan menggenjot kuantitasnya di Indonesia baik sejak awal hingga hari ini.

Sebenarnya segmentasi pasar Vespa tidak terlalu diperuntukkan bagi kalangan menengah ke atas (bisa dilihat pada daftar harga di atas) karena ada beberapa tipe motor merk lain yang jauh lebih mahal sehingga masalah harga bukan merupakan alasan. Mungkin lebih karena bentuk vespa yang khas rupanya hanya disukai orang-orang tertentu saja.
Prestise vespa juga turun karena ada perusahaan farmasi yang memakai vespa sebagai kendaraan operasionalnya yang mengakibatkan konsumen enggan memakai vespa karena tidak mau dikira penjual obat.
Vespa bersama sebagian besar motor klasik lainnya sedunia tergeser oleh motor Jepang yang lebih irit, praktis, dan murah sementara vespa tidak menawarkan perubahan teknologi dan model yang cukup berarti.
Kondisi sebagian besar vespa di Indonesia saat ini banyak yang tidak terawat. Jika kita melihat ada sepeda motor dituntun di jalan karena mogok, hampir selalu dipastikan itu adalah vespa. Otomatis persepsi kualitas vespa dipandang masyarakat semakin rendah, tidak peduli seberapa mahal harganya. Survei MarkPlus Professional Services bersama SWA di 5 kota besar di Indonesia menunjukkan bahwa persepsi kualitas Vespa berada di bawah Honda dan Yamaha.

Salah satu usaha perbaikan image oleh merk ini, mungkin, adalah dengan mengeluarkan vespa mewah beroda tiga berdesain lux berharga setara dengan sebuah mobil.
Vespa Kongo
Vespa Kongo adalah vespa penghargaan dari pemerintah Indonesia kepada kontingen Pasukan Penjaga Perdamaian Indonesia yang bertugas di Kongo saat itu. Pasukan bernama Kontingen Garuda (disingkat KONGA atau Pasukan Garuda) yang turut diperhitungkan di dunia dibandingkan pasukan perdamaian negara lain itu adalah pasukan Tentara Nasional Indonesia yang ditugaskan sebagai pasukan perdamaian di negara lain. Indonesia mulai turut serta mengirim pasukannya sebagai bagian dari pasukan penjaga perdamaian PBB sejak 1957. Awalnya, saat Indonesia merdeka pada tanggal 17 Agustus 1945, Mesir langsung mengadakan sidang menteri luar negeri negara-negara Liga Arab dan merupakan negara pertama yang mengakui kedaulatan Indonesia dengan datang langsung ke Ibu Kota RI waktu itu yaitu Yogyakarta. Untuk membalas budi Mesir dan Liga Arab, Presiden Sukarno membalas pembelaan negara-negara Arab di forum internasional dengan mengunjungi Mesir dan Arab Saudi pada 1956 dan Irak pada April 1960.
Pada 1956 itu, ketika Majelis Umum PBB memutuskan menarik mundur pasukan Inggris, Prancis dan Israel dari wilayah Mesir, Indonesia mendukung keputusan itu dan untuk pertama kalinya mengirim Pasukan Pemelihara Perdamaian PBB ke Mesir yang dinamakan dengan Kontingen Garuda I atau KONGA I.
KONGA II dikirim ke Kongo pada 1960 di bawah misi UNOC dengan jumlah pasukan 1.074 orang, bertugas di Kongo September 1960 hingga Mei 1961.
KONGA III dikirim ke Kongo pada 1962 di bawah misi UNOC dengan jumlah pasukan 3.457 orang, terdiri atas Batalyon 531/Raiders, satuan-satuan Kodam II/Bukit Barisan, Batalyon Kavaleri 7, dan unsur bantuan tempur, bertugas hingga akhir 1963. Menpangad Letjen TNI Ahmad Yani pernah berkunjung ke Markas Pasukan PBB di Kongo (ketika itu bernama Zaire) pada tanggal 19 Mei 1963.
Setelah menyelesaikan tugas perdamaian yang berat, Pasukan Garuda menerima tanda penghargaan dari Pemerintah Republik Indonesia berupa Vespa (sumber lain mengatakan ada juga penghargaan berbentuk uang dan beberapa peti jarum jahit). Di pasaran diketahui adanya vespa Kongo tahun 1963 untuk kontingen 2 dan 3. Kurang diketahui apakah kontingen 1 juga mendapatkannya, karena informasi semacam ini tidak mudah didapat. Yang menarik dan tidak diketahui banyak orang, pemberian vespa tersebut tidak terlepas dari tradisi dalam dunia kemiliteran dalam hal kepangkatan. Vespa berwarna hijau 150cc ditujukan bagi tentara yang lebih tinggi tingkat kepangkatannya, disusul vespa berwarna kuning dan biru 125cc untuk tingkat kepangkatan yang lebih rendah.

Selain itu guna membedakan vespa tersebut dari vespa lain yang satu tipe, disematkan tanda nomor prajurit yang bersangkutan pada sisi sebelah kiri handlebar (stang) yang berbentuk oval terbuat dari bahan kuningan serta sebuah piagam penghargaan yang menyertainya. Maka berseliweranlah vespa-vespa tersebut di jalan-jalan sehingga vespa dengan pantat bulat tersebut dikenal sebagian masyarakat sebagai vespa Kongo, sementara sebagian lain justru menyamaratakan dengan nama vespa ndog (telur) karena bagian samping kanan kirinya bulat mirip telur.

Vespa Congo tidak diproduksi di Italia melainkan di Jerman. Dengan berbahan baku plat baja yang lebih keras daripada Vespa bulat umumnya, vespa ini memiliki tingkat kelengkapan yang lebih daripada vespa buatan Italia yang umum beredar di Indonesia (VBB1T maupun VBB2T).
Jacob Oswald Hoffmann adalah orang Jerman yang berjasa memasukkan vespa ke Jerman. Kerjasama vespa dengan Hoffmann putus awal tahun 1955 karena Hoffmann mendesain model sport sendiri. Kemudian vespa bekerjasama dengan Messerschmitt Co. yang kemudian mengeluarkan produksi vespa pertamanya pada tahun 1955 itu juga. Mereka mengeluarkan dua model yaitu Vespa GS yang di Indonesia sering disebut sebagai GS versi Jerman dan 150 Touren. Mereka juga menyediakan purna jual dan service serta spare part bagi Vespa produksi Hoffmann. Kerjasama ini berlanjut hingga akhir tahun 1957. Vespa GmbH Augsburg kemudian berdiri pada tahun 1958 sebagai sebuah perusahaan patungan antara Piaggio dan Martial Fane Organisation, kongsi ini kemudian juga menyediakan beberapa bagian bagi Vespa Messerschmitt. Saat kerjasama dengan Augsburg inilah Vespa Congo diorder untuk Indonesia.
Kedua model yang dibuat saat berkongsi dengan Messerchmitt (150 Touren dan GS) kemudian dikembangkan dengan beberapa modifikasi. Selain itu Vespa GmbH Augsburg juga melahirkan Vespa 125 cc yang pertama kali diperkenalkan dalam tahun 1958. Produksi berlanjut hingga tahun 1963, yang merupakan saat puncak perubahan skuter dan diproduksinya yang sudah tidak terlalu banyak. Selanjutnya, Jerman memilih hanya mengimpor Vespa langsung dari Itali.
Ciri khas Vespa Congo :
1. Spakboard bulat tidak ada sambungannya seperti vespa umumnya.
2. Ring (pelek/teromol) 10 inchi.
3. Punya tonjolan seperti tombol/saklar di sambungan koplingnya (posisi setang sebelah kiri).
4. Spidometer kotak & agak besar (berbeda dengan spidometer VNA/VNB).
5. Ada lambang garuda di body depan sebelah kiri (sekarang jarang yang ada).
6. Di atas spidometer ada lampu kecil seperti lampu cabe.
7. Nomor mesin diawali dengan kode VGLB.
8. Pada BPKB tercantum tulisan ex Brigade Garuda III.

Vespa PX
Vespa PX salah satu legenda skuter dari pabrikan Piaggio Italia. Piaggio pertama kali memproduksi Vespa PX tahun 1975 dengan varian 125 cc , 150 cc, dan 200 cc bermesin 2 tak transmisi manual. Masa produksi PX berlangsung hingga 33 tahun, dihentikan tahun 2008 karena dianggap tidak memenuhi standar emisi gas buang.

Pada tahun berikutnya LML Star yang berbodi PX bermesin 2 tak dan 4 tak diproduksi LML yang berbasis di India untuk mengisi permintaan pasar Eropa dan Amerika. LML pernah menjalin kerja sama produksi dengan Piaggio sejak tahun 1984 hingga 1999.

Piaggio melalui media release menyatakan akan memproduksi kembali Vespa PX tahun 2011, bahkan pada EICMA Show di Milan Vespa PX ikut dipamerkan. Piaggio akan memproduksi Vespa PX 125 dan 150 bermesin 2 tak mengunakan desain yang sama dengan PX sebelumnya. Perubahan hanya pada penggunaan bahan seater yang lebih baik, penambahan electric starter disamping kick starter, dan head lamp yang lebih terang. Menghadapi rencana ini LML menyatakan tidak khawatir karena LML dibanderol lebih murah ketimbang PX, selain itu LML berencana akan memproduksi LML star dengan fuel injection.
Pelana baru untuk Vespa PX memiliki desain dan pelapis serba baru, ideal untuk berboncengan, mengakomodasi pengendara dari semua statures, dan menawarkan kenyamanan serta kontrol kendaraan. Suspensi depan khas PX yang merupakan bagian intrinsik dari Vespa bekerja sama dengan pegas coil dan dual shock absorber memberikan efek hidrolik berkendara yang unik. Mesin ‘klasik’ 125cc dan 150cc silinder tunggal 2-tak siap melesatkan setiap pengendara Vespa PX2011. Suhu mesin dijaga dengan forced air cooling. Pengapian mengandalkan CDI dengan starter elektrik dan kaki. Gearbox manual empat percepatan khas Vespa PX jelas jadi bagian paling menggoda adrenalin buat mereka pecinta skuter yang lebih menginginkan hentakan.
Di saat merk lain sibuk mengembangkan desain motor yang berbeda dari sebelumnya (kadang bahkan mesin yang sama diberikan desain body yang berganti-ganti), perusahaan Vespa di bawah Piaggio ini tetap mempertahankan style-nya. Vespa PX dengan bentuknya yang khas, bagaimanapun, telah mendapatkan hati para penggemarnya.
Vespa Sprint
Vespa Sprint dibuat oleh Vespa dari tahun 1965 – 1979. Datang dalam dua versi. Yang pertama kali keluar dinamai Vespa Sprint, dibuat hingga tahun 1974. Model selanjutnya dinamakan Vespa Sprint Veloce, dibuat tahun 1969 hingga 1979, jadi keduanya pernah keluar bersamaan dari tahun 1969 hingga 1974.
Update terbesar Sprint Veloce adalah pada mesinnya. Desainnya diubah dari desain lamanya yang 2 port dengan tambahan transfer port ketiga pada puncak akhirnya. Rasio kompresi juga ditingkatkan dari Vespa Sprint yang 7.5:1 menjadi 7. 7 : 1 pada Vespa Sprint Veloce.
Model yang asli tidak mempunyai lampu reting / signal namun Sprint Veloce akhirnya berhasil diekspor semua ke U.S setelah tahun 1973 mempunyai lampu reting sebagai perlengkapan standar untuk memuaskan peraturan Amerika. Bajaj Chetak, diproduksi oleh India, merupakan duplikat Vespa Sprint. Karenanya, hingga sekarang setiap bagian suku cadangnya masih bisa didapatkan dalam kondisi baru di pasar bekas.
Hampir setiap sudut penampilan Vespa 150 Sprint diperbesar dari vespa umumnya keluaran dekade 1960an (VNA / VNB / VBB / VBC) dengan spesifikasi lebih lebar pada ban (3.50X10”), box di kiri kanan serta spakbor lebih besar dibandingkan vespa kelas super; kapasitas 145.45 cc; 2-tak; Silinder tunggal; Pendingin udara; 4-kecepatan; Pengapian koil; Rem depan dan belakang tromol; Jarak roda 1200 mm; Berat kering 89 kg; Kapasitas tanki 7.7 liter (cadangan 1.4 liter); Konsumsi BBM 2.1km/100km (apx); dan Radius belok 1400 mm.
Vespa sprint mempunyai penampilan awal yang hampir menyerupai Vespa Grand Lux dan beberapa pendapat mengatakan bahwa vespa sprint merupakan spec-drop dari Vespa GL.

Kerangka body Vespa 150 Sprint sama dengan produk untuk Vespa GL, namun dengan sentuhan warna baru yakni silver metalik. Di sayap (fender) bagian kanan tersemat kata Vespa Sprint tersusun miring dua baris dengan style italic handwritting terbuat dari sejenis campuran alumunium yang berefek kebiru-biruan. Begitupun halnya dengan kata dibagian belakang, tertulis 150 Sprint tersusun miring satu baris yang berbahan serta material sama seperti bagian depan dan terletak agak diatas lampu bagian belakang.
Terdapat striping lurus terbuat dari alumunium pada bagian spakbor depan, box bagasi dan box mesin yang sejajar di kiri kanannya. Dengan kunci stang berbentuk oval, Vespa 150 Sprint menggunakan 2 jenis jok sesuai dengan permintaan yaitu model jok (sadle) ganda (pengendara dan penumpang) berwarna biru tua dan jok panjang (single-seater).
Bagian yg berlapis krum adalah baut gagang rem depan dan gagang kopling, klakson, rumah lampu belakang, ring lampu depan, kunci stang, tutup kunci stang dan kunci tutup box bagasi. Lapisan berwarna seng terdapat pada bagian-bagian seperti standar, shock bagian depan, seluruh baut dan mur serta tutup bak kopling.
Bagian yg beraksen posfor meliputi shock bagian belakang termasuk per, baut dan murnya, serta per bagian depan. Sentuhan metal halus terdapat pada bagian gagang rem depan dan kopling, pedal rem belakang, gantungan barang, kuku macan, jengger depan, selahan, kunci (pengkait) box mesin, gagang kran bensin, dan lis sayap depan. Bagian yg bernuansa stainless adalah rumah saklar dan lis karpet tengah yang terbuat dari karet.
Setang (handlebar) model kotak seperti GL dan Super serta speedometer oval, adapun nomor serial body Vespa 150 Sprint terukir dibagian kiri dibawah box bagasi dengan kode VLB1T 1001-VLB1T 1205477 dan nomor mesin di bagian paha ayam mesin dekat pipa saluran knalpot diawali dengan kode VLB1M. Bagian-bagian lain yg memiliki warna berkesan alumunium meliputi velg, tromol depan dan belakang, tutup kipas, fork depan. Sementara itu warna lapisan anti karatnya adalah abu-abu.

VESPA 150 SPRINT VELOCE
Diproduksi antara tahun 1969 hingga 1979 mesin Vespa Sprint 150 Veloce dirancang lebih dahsyat ketimbang Vespa 150 Sprint. Dimana salah satunya adalah dengan ditanamkannya karburator berukuran 20/20 dan saringan karburator yang diperbesar.
Perubahan lainnya adalah pada knalpot yg lebih besar sehingga menghasilkan suara berbeda dari serie sebelumnya. Dengan top speed mesin mencapai 97km/h, ukuran body Vespa 150 Sprint Veloce sama dengan Vespa 150 Sprint. Veloce memiliki model baru dalam bentuk lampu depan yang membulat dengan lingkaran 130mm dan dilindungi oleh ring lampu beraksen krum. Terdapat lampu kecil yang tersambung dengan lampu depan, berwarna hijau dikelilingi oleh ring alumunium di stang bagian atas speedometer.
Speedometerpun mengalami perubahan yang kontras dibandingkan dengan Vespa 150 Sprint. Speedometer veloce dirancang sama dengan model Vespa Super serie terakhir yang berbentuk lebih kecil (clamshell), mempunyai warna putih fascia dengan maximum angka tertera 120 km/h.
Sama halnya dengan Vespa 150 Sprint, veloce memiliki logo model baru yang berbentuk hexagonal (cung) tersematkan didepan mengganti logo P/ seperti serie vespa keluaran sebelumnya.
Dengan tidak menyertakan kembali striping alumunium yang terdapat pada spakbor depan dan box kiri-kanan. Pada awal produksinya, model handgrip veloce berwarna abu-abu terang dengan lambang Piaggio hexagonal didalamnya. Pada saat perjalanan produksi warna handgrip diganti hitam juga speedometer dan karet box kiri-kanannya.
Lampu belakang yang berbentuk kotak besar seakan menyembul dari body bagian belakang berwarna merah menyala dengan reflector menyatu didalamnya dan dilindungi oleh tutup yang terbuat dari bahan plastic pada bagian atasnya dengan warna senafas warna body.
Pada perkembangannya motif tulisan bagian depan dan belakangpun ikut berubah. Tulisan vespa bagian depan menggunakan font yang lebih tegas beraksen krum dimana setiap hurufnya seakan disatukan oleh plat yang berbintik halus dan berwarna hitam dengan posisi horizontal. Sementara itu pada bagian belakang tertulis vespa v. beraksen krum ter-emboss yang dibingkai dengan bentuk segi empat memanjang dimana dasar dari tulisan tersebut berwarna hitam berbintik halus dengan posisi horizontal. Adapun bahan dan material dari pada tulisan tersebut sama dengan serie sebelumnya.
Lapisan krum terdapat pada bagian-bagian yang antara lain ring lampu depan, tutup kunci stang dan kunci box bagasi. Lapisan beraksen seng terdapat pada bagian standar, shockbreaker dan per bagian depan, baut dan mur, dan tutup bak presneleng. Aksen phosfor menghiasi shock bagian belakang (termasuk per, baut dan mur), per standar dan mur baut bagian mesin. Kesan warna metal halus terdapat pada gagang rem depan dan kopling, pedal rem belakang, gantungan barang, jengger spakbor, selahan, kunci box mesin, kuku macan dan puteran kunci tangki. Sementara itu lapisan stainless terkesan pada rumah saklar dan lis karpet karet tengah.
Adapun nomor serial body Vespa 150 Sprint Veloce terukir dibagian kiri dibawah box bagasi dengan kode VLB1T 0150001-VLB1T 0368119. Pada perkembangannya seiring dengan perubahan-perubahan yang terjadi pada beberapa bagian sebagaimana tersebut diatas, nomor serial body pindah posisi ke sebelah kanan box mesin sama seperti produk-produk piaggio era 1980’an.
Namun demikian nomor mesin tetap berada di bagian paha ayam mesin dekat pipa saluran knalpot. Bagian lain yg memiliki warna alumunium adalah velg, tromol, tutup kipas, fork depan, dan warna lapisan anti karatnya adalah abu-abu.
Seiring dengan warna-warninya kehidupan generasi 1970’an yang dikenal dengan flower generation, Piaggio menangkap semangat ini melalui pengaplikasian warna-warna cerah dalam produk Vespa 150 Sprint Veloce. Apabila pada Vespa 150 Sprint hanya tersedia satu warna saja (silver metalik), tidak demikian halnya dengan Vespa 150 Sprint Veloce.
Veloce dari tahun ke tahun memiliki option warna yang berbeda-beda antara lain sebagai berikut: 1969-1970 warna silver metalik, 1970-1971 biru, 1971-1972 metalik putih rembulan, 1972-1973 merah, 1973-1975 hijau ascott, 1975-1976 hijau valombrossa, 1976-1979 biru marine dan abu-abu polaris.

Vespa sprint mempunyai daya angkut tinggi yang diselaraskan dengan kecepatannya dan menjadi primadona prodk Vespa di era 1970an dengan harga terjangkau dibandingkan dengan seri-seri khusus lainnya pada masa itu.
Sampai saat ini, sudah puluhan varian Vespa yang didatangkan di Indonesia. Dari yang paling tua hingga yang paling baru ada di Indonesia. Namun, maraknya ekspor Vespa (terutama Vespa tua yang telah dianggap antik) sedikit banyak mengurangi populasi Vespa di Indonesia.

Vespa adalah merk scooter dari Italia. Vespa didirikan tanggal 23 April 1946 di Florence di bawah perusahaan induk Piaggio & Co. SpA yang bermarkas di Pontedera Italia. Piaggio merupakan perusahaan pembuat kendaraan roda dua terbesar di Eropa dan terbesar ke-empat dunia ditinjau dari sisi penjualan.
Sejak awal produksi, skuter Vespa telah terkenal akan cat yang melekat kuat, body motor yang terbuat dari baja tekan, penutup mesin yang punya estetika (yang sekaligus bisa menyembunyikan mekanisme mesin maupun gemuk atau kotoran yang menempel), papan pijakan kaki rata (yang menyediakan perlindungan kaki), dan tameng depan struktural yang sekaligus melindungi pengendara dari terpaan angin maupun air dari depan. Tidak diragukan lagi, Vespa merupakan skuter pertama yang secara global meraih kesuksesan.

Inspirasi desain Vespa (dan Lambretta) dianggap diambil dari skuter buatan Nebraska, Amerika yaitu skuter Cushman Airborne A53 berwarna hijau zaitun (di kemudian hari justru Cushman menjadi pabrik di bawah lisensi Vespa) yang sebelum PD2 banyak berkeliaran di Italia sebagai transportasi militer Amerika karena taktik perang NAZI saat itu yang menghancurkan jalan dan jembatan di Dolomites (daerah sektor Alps) dan

perbatasan Austria.

Pada Perang Dunia I dan II, perusahaan pendahulu Vespa (Piaggio) memfokuskan pada produksi pesawat pembom. Mungkin itu yang menjadi alasan mengapa Pontedera menjadi target dan akhirnya dihancurkan oleh bom Sekutu. Ekonomi Italia pun lumpuh dan keadaan jalan yang hancur saat itu tidak mendukung pembangunan kembali pasar mobil. Enrico Piaggio, putra pendiri Rinaldo Piaggio, memutuskan untuk meninggalkan bidang penerbangan dalam rangka mengatasi kebutuhan mendesak Italia akan sarana transportasi yang modern namun cukup terjangkau oleh rakyat.

Enrico Piaggio melalui pabriknya di Biella sebenarnya telah memproduksi motor-scooter (1943-1944). Prototipe ini didesain oleh insinyur Piaggio yaitu Renzo Spolti bersama Vittorio Casini dan diberi kode MP5 (Moto Piaggio 5), yang kemudian oleh para pekerja dinamai “Paperino” yang berarti “Donald Duck”. Enrico Piaggio tidak menyukai desain ini kemudian meminta insinyur Corradino D’Ascanio untuk me-review proyek tersebut dan mendesain kembali sesuatu yang berbeda, dengan pengembangan teknis dan model. Meskipun tidak suka, namun 100 unit Paperino telah diproduksi yang sekarang hanya dimiliki oleh para kolektor (salah satunya ada di Indonesia).

Insinyur aeronautika Corradino D’Ascanio (bergabung dengan Piaggio tahun 1934) yang mendapat tugas pendesainan kembali tersebut sebelumnya bertanggung jawab akan desain, konstruksi, dan menerbangkan helikopter modern pertama Agusta. D’Ascanio sebelumnya telah dimintai konsultasi oleh Ferdinando Innocenti untuk mendesain kendaraan yang sederhana, kuat, dan terjangkau, mudah dikendarai laki-laki maupun wanita, bisa memuat penumpang, dan tidak membuat pakaian pengendaranya kotor (maka keluarlah Lambretta pertama). Karena suatu hal, D’Ascanio bermasalah dengan Innocenti kemudian menyerahkan desainnya kepada Enrico Piaggio.
D’Ascanio membuat rancangan yang simple, ekonomis, nyaman dan juga elegan. D’Ascanio memang memimpikan sebuah revolusi kendaraan baru karena ia sendiri sebenarnya benci dan tidak dapat mengendarai sepeda motor roda dua karena dianggapnya berat, kotor, dan tidak tangguh. Maka ia mengambil gambaran dari keahliannya di bidang teknologi pesawat terbang. Dia membayangkan sebuah kendaraan yang dibangun dengan sebuah “Monocoque” atau Unibody Steel Chassis. Garpu depan seperti ban pesawat yang sedang mendarat dan mudah untuk penggantian ban. Hasilnya adalah sebuah design yg terinspirasi dari pesawat yang sampai saat ini berbeda dengan kendaraan yang lain.
Tahun 1945, tahun dimana Indonesia mendapatkan kemerdekaannya, konstruksi alternatif tersebut ditemukan. Awalnya berupa sebuah konsep sepeda motor berkerangka besi dengan lekuk membulat bagai terowong. Yang mengejutkan, ternyata bagian staternya dirancang dengan menggunakan komponen bom dan rodanya diambil dari roda pesawat tempur. Guna mengoptimalkan bentuk dan keamanan penggunanya, sang insinyur merancang papan penutup kaki pada bagian depan. Proyek ini dipimpin langsung oleh Corradino d’Ascanio sehingga hak paten pun segera dapat mereka kantongi.
Tahun 1946, selesailah prototipe skuter dengan seri MP 6 (Moto Piaggio 6). Saat sang boz Enrico Piaggio melihat prototipe MP6 itu, ia secara tak sengaja berseru “Sambra Una Vespa” (terlihat seperti Tawon). Akhirnya dari seruan tak sengaja itu, diputuskan kendaraan tersebut diberi nama “Vespa” (=tawon). Vespa menurut bahasa Latin dan Italia memang berarti tawon.

Pada tanggal 23 April 1946, jam 12 di kantor pusat untuk penemuan, model dan pembuatan Departemen Perindustrian dan Perdagangan (Ministry of Industry and Commerce) di Florence, Piaggio e CSpA mengambil paten untuk “sebuah sepeda motor yang kompleks, bagian dan elemennya rasional, yang digabungkan dengan frame yang dilengkapi tameng lumpur, dan casing yang menutupi seluruh bagian mekanis “. Pada bulan Desember hak paten tersebut disetujui. Pada musim semi 1946, tiga belas contoh pertama MP6 yang diproduksi massal di pabrik Piaggio di Pontedera, Italia muncul.

Setelah debut publik di Milan Fair 1946, lima puluh pertama dijual perlahan, mungkin karena harganya untuk segmen atas seperti ketika pertama kali diintroduksi ke Indonesia. Penjualan vespa tahun 1947 sejumlah 2.500 unit, lebih dari 10.000 unit pada tahun 1948, 35.000 unit pada akhir tahun 1949, lebih dari 60.000 unit pada tahun 1950, dan lebih dari satu juta unit pada tahun 1956 yang membuktikan bahwa bentuk ‘tawon’ tersebut sangat bisa diterima oleh masyarakat saat itu. Selain kesuksesan Italia dalam menjadi perintis bentuk motor ala ‘tawon’ itu, bahasa Italia juga mendapatkan kosa kata baru, yaitu “vespare” yang berarti pergi ke suatu tempat menggunakan Vespa.
Antara tahun 1960-an hingga 1970-an, Vespa menjadi simbol dari revolusi gagasan pada waktu itu. Produk ini ternyata laris diserap pasar Prancis, Inggris, Belgia, Spanyol, Brazil, dan India — selain di pasar domestik produk ini laku bagai kacang goreng. Selain itu, India pun memproduksi jenis dan bentuk yang sama dengan mengambil mesin Bajaj. Jenisnya adalah Bajaj Deluxe dan Bajaj Super. Sejumlah pihak lantas mengajukan lamaran untuk joint membuat Vespa.

Pada 1950 munculah Vespa 125 cc buatan Jerman. Pada saat itu banyak negara lain yang mencoba membuat produk serupa, tetapi ternyata mereka tak sedikitpun mampu menyaingi Piaggio. Di antara pesaing itu adalah Lambretta, Heinkel, Zundapp, dan NSU. Bagi masyarakat Indonesia, produk Lambretta dan Zundapp, sempat populer di era 1960-an. Ada yang menganggap bahwa fanatisme terhadap Vespa ternyata muncul akibat ciri dasar bentuk motor ini yang selalu dipertahankan pada setiap produk berikutnya. Bahkan saat mereka terbilang melakukan ”revolusi” bentuk pada produk baru, Vespa 150 GS, kekhasan pantat bahenol masih terasa melekat.

Produk GS 150 kala itu sangat populer sehingga hampir selalu tampil di tiap film tahun 1960-an. Kala itu vespa ini dikenal sebagai Vespamore (di Indonesia dikenal sebagai vespa Ndog / telur atau vespa Kongo). Kemudi dan lampu sorot seri ini mulai dibuat menyatu dan bentuk pantatnya benar-benar masih membulat yang menjadi ciri khasnya.

Vespa secara garis besar terbagi dalam dua ukuran, “largeframe” dan “smallframe”. Vespa smallframe terdiri dari versi 50 cc, 90 cc, 100 cc, dan 125 cc. Semua menggunakan mesin yang diturunkan dari model 50 cc tahun 1963. Vespa largeframe di 125 cc, 150 cc, 160 cc, 180 cc, dan 200 cc menggunakan mesin yang diturunkan dari mesin 125 cc yang didesain ulang produksi akhir tahun 1950-an. Vespa largeframe berevolusi menjadi PX di akhir 1970-an dan diproduksi dengan versi 125 cc dan 150 cc sampai Juli 2007. Smallframe berevolusi menjadi PK pada awal tahun 1980.

Dan cerita terus berlanjut saat ini dengan model generasi baru Vespa dengan mempersembahkan Vespa ET2, Vespa ET4, Vespa Grand Turismo dan Vespa PX 150. Vespa bukan hanya sekedar skuter tapi menjadi salah satu icon besar orang Italia.

VESPA JERMAN

Vespa Hoffmann
Pada tahun 1950 Vespa dibuat di bawah lisensi oleh pabrik Hoffmann di Lintorf. Apa yang disebut “Hoffmann”-Vespa yang tersedia dengan pergeseran-stick dan kemudian dengan perubahan kabel terkontrol-gear. Pada tahun 1954 model “Königin” (ratu) diperkenalkan dengan cahaya-fender dan lampu pada handlebar. Bagian Mesin dan bagian tubuh yang paling identik dengan model fender-cahaya italian.
Jacob Oswald Hoffmann adalah pemilik pabrik sepeda di Lintorf, sebuah kota yang terletak di Utara Dusseldorf. Dia membangun sendiri pabrik tersebut dengan membeli sebidang tanah yang diatasnya telah berdiri beberapa gedung bekas pabrik pacul/cangkul setelah berakhirnya perang. Suatu ketika pada awal 1949 ia mendapati beberapa foto vespa hasil jepretan wartawan berada diatas meja kerjanya. Dari sini ada perbedaan yang fundamental, kemudian Hoffman mencari tahu lebih banyak mengenai objek foto tersebut.
Kesempatan datang saat di Frankfurt Show, dimana Hoffmann dan pihak Vespa bertemu langsung untuk pertama kalinya. Dari sana kemudian Hoffmann berkeinginan membangun pabrik Vespa di Lintorf. Ia kemudian mengajukan kepada Piaggio untuk diberikan lisensi membangun Vespa bagi pasar Jerman.
Piaggio sangat mendukung permintaan Hoffmann tersebut. Mereka kemudian melihat secara langsung kemungkinan akan pasar Vespa di Jerman dan mendapatkan bahwa Vespa dapat diterima oleh pasar Jerman. Langkah berikutnya adalah mereka mengadakan pendekatan kepada beberapa importir, akan tetapi para importir tersebut tidak ada yang berminat. Penundaan ini diminimalisir dengan mempercepat penandatanganan kesepakatan kerjasama diantara keduanya dan mulailah Hoffmann sebagai pemilik lisensi utama atas produk Vespa untuk seluruh Jerman Barat juga sebagian pasar Vespa di bagian Utara negara tersebut dan berhak atas export ke Belanda, Belgia serta Denmark. Pertanggung jawaban penjualan untuk wilayah bagian Selatan negara tersebut ditangani oleh Vespa Marketing GmbH di Frankfurt. Tahun 1950, vespa Hoffmann telah diproduksi di Jerman.
Vespa tersebut ternyata cepat populer di Jerman, media massa mengangkatnya sebagai produk yang inovatif dan stylist serta memuji Piaggio atas ciptaannya berupa kendaraan transportasi roda dua yang sangat menarik. Tahun 1953, pabrik Hoffmann telah memproduksi lebih dari 400 unit Vespa setiap minggunya. Akan tetapi memasuki tahun-tahun berikutnya angka produksi menurun hingga setengahnya. Dalam kondisi perekonomian Jerman yang tidak menguntungkan tersebut, Hoffmann percaya akan jalan keluarnya yaitu tetap pada jalur kompetisi dan ia berinisiatif menciptakan Vespa dengan performa yang lebih bagus.
Kemudian (pada 1954) ia menciptakan Vespa dengan sebutan model “Königin” (ratu) yang terlihat gagah dengan ditambahkan sentuhan krom serta lampu depan dan lain sebagainya. Biaya pengembangan Konigin ternyata sangat mahal, dan membahayakan kondisi keuangan Hoffmann. Pembuatan skuter jenis baru lainnya juga menjadikan kerjasama antara Hoffmann dengan Piaggio terputus, memasuki awal tahun 1955 kongsi keduanya bubar.

Vespa Messerschmitt

Piaggio kemudian menjalin hubungan dengan Messerschmitt Co., yang kemudian mengeluarkan produksi Vespa pertama di tahun 1955. Mereka mengeluarkan dua model yaitu 150 Touren 1-2 dan GS 1-3 yang diklaim lebih dahsyat. T1 dan T2 mempunyai ban 10 inchi dan merupakan mesin 150 pertama. T2 mempunyai kabel kontrol terbuka / terlihat di luar. GS1 mirip dengan T2 dengan kabel kontrol terbuka dan ban 10 inchi tipe tertutup. Hanya tersedia warna silver (kecuali model yang dieksport ke UK). Mereka juga menyediakan purna jual dan service serta spare part bagi Vespa produksi Hoffmann. Kerjasama ini berlanjut hingga akhir tahun 1957.

Vespa GmbH Augsburg

Setelah itu berdirilah Vespa GmbH Augsburg, perusahaan patungan antara Piaggio dan Martial Fane Organisation, kongsi ini kemudian juga menyediakan beberapa bagian bagi Vespa Messerschmitt. Kedua model yang dibuat saat kongsian dengan Messerschmitt (150 Touren dan GS) kemudian dikembangkan dengan beberapa modifikasi. Selain itu Vespa GmbH Augsburg juga melahirkan Vespa 125 cc yang pertama kali diperkenalkan dalam tahun 1958. Produk vespa Augsburg antara lain T1-2 125, T3-4 150, GL, Sprint, GS4. T3 mempunyai kabel kontrol tertutup seperti pada GS3 dan mempunyai roda 10 inchi. Model Jerman spesial 125 T1 dan T2 mempunyai ban 8 inchi dan 150 T4 mempunyai ban 10 inchi sangat mirip dengan model Italia VNA-VBB. Panel samping pada model Italia memang kurang diperhatikan. Kelistrikan diubah dari AC menjadi DC dan memberikan peluang untuk memasang mesin seri-P pada rangka ini. GS4 merupakan suksesor dari GS3 yang masih tradisional. Model ini hanya berwarna putih dan diubah sistem kelistrikannya dari AC tanpa batere menjadi DC dengan batere. Mereka juga melakukan hal yang sama terhadap GL dan di kemudian hari model Sprint yang dibangun paralel. Indikator dipasang di panel samping sementara switch, klakson, dan tipe reting tidak diubah. Produksi berlanjut hingga tahun 1963, yang merupakan saat puncak perubahan scooter dan produksinya yang sudah tidak terlalu banyak. Pada kelanjutannya Jerman kemudian mengimpor Vespa langsung dari Italy.

VESPA PRANCIS

Vespa 50 dengan Pedal
Vespa di Prancis diproduksi oleh perusahaan ACMA (Ateliers de Construction de Motocycles et Automobiles) di bawah lisensi perusahaan induk di Italia. Hukum Prancis saat itu memungkinkan anak berumur 14 tahun mengendarai sepeda motor, karena itu lahirlah vespa 50 dengan pedal pada tahun 1970 yang membuat vespa ini bisa pula dikayuh dengan kaki (seperti sepeda) saat kehabisan bensin di jalan.

Vespa ACMA
Vespa ACMA pada awal 1950an sudah menggunakan batok lampu di setang tetapi masih terpisah dengan speedometer. Setelah itu batok lampu disatukan dengan speedometer dengan desain yang eksotik.

Vespa 150 TAP
Merupakan vespa yang diproduksi di Prancis untuk keperluan perang. Vespa dimodifikasi untuk mengangkut senjata M20 (M20 75 mm recoilless rifle) yang digunakan pada tahun 1950an oleh AU Prancis (French Airborne Forces /Troupes aéroportées/TAP). Diproduksi oleh pabrik Ateliers de Construction de Motocycles et Automobiles (ACMA), perusahaan di Prancis yang diberi lisensi oleh Vespa pada tahun 1956 hingga 1959.
Dilengkapi dengan senjata bazoka handal M20 buatan Amerika yang ringan, anti tank, dan anti hentakan balik saat ditembakkan karena adanya gas propelan. Bobotnya sangat ringan jika dibandingkan dengan meriam standar 75mm lainnya tetapi masih mampu menembus baja berketebalan 100 mm dengan hulu ledak yang disebut HEAT (High Explosive Anti tank). Skuter akan dijatuhkan dari udara dengan parasut dobel, masing-masing dikawal oleh dua orang sebagai satu tim. Jadi, dibutuhkan lima parasut untuk setiap tim agar bisa membawa 2 orang kru, senjata, amunisi, dan dua skuter. Bazoka akan dimuat di satu skuter, sementara amunisi dimuat di skuter satunya. Barulah mereka segera melaju untuk mendekati musuhnya, meskipun rumornya mereka lebih sering mendorongnya daripada menaikinya. Selain itu, karena tidak adanya jenis perangkat recoilless rifle yang dirancang untuk ditembakkan dari skuter, bazoka ini harus dipasang pada tripod yang juga dimuat oleh skuter, sebelum ditembakkan. “Vespa Bazoka” ini dibandrol dengan harga sekitar $500 sementara harga M20 jauh di atasnya. Sekitar 800 skuter ini dikerahkan dalam Perang di Aljazair (1954 – 1962).

VESPA INGGRIS
Perusahaan Douglas dari Kingswood, Bristol, memulai produksi sepeda motor pada tahun 1907. Pada tahun 1948, perusahaan tersebut bangkrut. Ketika berlibur di Italia, Managing Director Claude McCormack melihat sebuah Vespa dan segera membuat perjanjian dengan Piaggio untuk memproduksi vespa di bawah lisensi di Bristol.
Model Rod 1951-1955
“Rod” adalah istilah retro mengacu pada mekanisme perubahan gigi. Skuter ini dipasarkan hanya sebagai “Vespa 125″ dengan spek Piaggio 1949 yang baru saja diganti. Namun produksi baru terealisasi pada April 1951. Batok lampu depan dipindahkan ke perisai untuk menghormati peraturan penerangan lokal (mungkin maksudnya agar tidak silau di mata pejalan kaki).

Sama dengan model sebelumnya dengan perubahan kabel gir.

GL2 1954-55
Mesin dengan transfer port twin yang up to date dipasang di sasis 1949 yang diperbarui.

42L2 1955-1956
Akhirnya menggunakan sasis gaya baru dan batok lampu dipindahkan ke setang.

92L2 1956-1959
Merupakan modifikasi dari 42L2 dengan perubahan pada tanki yang diperbesar kapasitasnya dan ceruk di bawah pengendara yang lebih cekung.

102L2 1957
Merupakan vespa 92L2 dengan mesin 150cc yang diimpor dari Piaggio. Hanya segelintir dibuat dan merupakan buatan tangan.

152L2 1959-1960
Sebuah model benar-benar baru diperkenalkan sekitar satu tahun setelah Piaggio. Bagian belakang casing dibangun dalam dua bagian dengan jahitan di bagian tengah dan pembawa mesin sekarang tidak terpisahkan dengan bak mesin. Ketika permintaan melampaui pasokan, sejumlah model Piaggio setara (yang VNA) diimpor.

Sportique 1961-1965
Douglas menyetop produksi vespa 125cc dan membangun pengganti model Piaggio 150cc (VBB). Dalam upaya menghentikan laju penurunan penjualan, sejumlah edisi spesial dengan aksesoris yang masih tergolong standar pun dikeluarkan. Bisa dilihat Supreme 1962 silver dan Grand Luxe warna emas. Pada 1947 muncul Vespa 98 tipe Corsicana 98cc menggunakan karburator 17 mm tipe sport.

Pada tahun yang sama, 1947, keluar Vespa 98 tipe Korsika (Circuit) 98cc.

Pada 1949, Vespa sebenarnya mulai mendapatkan tempat yang baik di sirkuit balap, dengan vespa Corsa 125 balapnya “telaio di lega” (sasis campuran) GP racer.

Vespa Montlhéry merupakan skuter legenda, diproduksi tahun 1950 untuk memecahkan rekor dunia di sirkuit Prancis. Berhasil mencatatkan 17 rekor dalam 10 jam. Vespa ini mempunyai daya tahan streamline dan merupakan skuter balap kecepatan di tanah yang memecahkan lebih dari tujuh belas rekor dunia termasuk lari 1 jam dengan kecepatan rata-rata 134km /jam, lari 100 mil dengan kecepatan rata-rata 129.7km / jam; dan lari 1.000 mil dengan kecepatan rata-rata 124.3km / jam!

Vespa 125 Sei Giorni (enam hari) digunakan oleh Joseph CAU untuk memenangkan balapan.

Vespa Siluro (=Torpedo) atau disebut juga Catfish (=Lele) merupakan salah satu mesin Vespa yang mengguncangkan dunia kendaraan multi-silinder. Didesain oleh desainer handal Piaggio yaitu D’Ascanio dengan fitur spesial berupa counter-opposing pistons, maka Siluro menjadi Vespa super-streamline yang menggunakan mesin twin horizontal-menentang 124,5 cc dan menghasilkan lebih dari 17 HP pada 9500 rpm. Pada 1951, Siluro dikendarai oleh Dino Mazzoncini memecahkan rekor kilometer di 21,4 detik dengan kecepatan rata-rata 171,1 124.3km /jam.
